Republican Leader of the Energy and Commerce Committee Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Republican Leader of the Health Subcommittee Brett Guthrie (R-KY) released the following statement after President Joe Biden signed H.R. 3537, the Accelerating Access to Critical Therapies for ALS Act, into law.
“Today marks a new day for people who believe in the promise of American medical innovation. The Accelerating Access to Critical Therapies for ALS Act will bring hope to those with ALS and their loved ones by promoting access to potentially breakthrough treatments. It establishes a grant program through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to support research and boost access to investigational therapies. It also directs HHS to establish a public-private partnership for neurodegenerative diseases, which will advance the development and regulatory approval of drugs to help treat ALS and other rare neurodegenerative diseases. All of this will help America one day discover a cure and turn hope for lifesaving treatments into a reality. We thank our colleagues in both the House and Senate for their bipartisan work on this legislation that is now law.”
Note: H.R.3537 was reported favorably as amended by voice vote by the Energy and Commerce Committee on November 17, 2021. It passed the House on December 8, 2021, and the Senate on December 16, 2021.
