The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Habitat Conservation has highlighted their list of the top 21 habitat conservation stories of 2021.
With many stories shared highlighting conservation efforts, a recent post on the NOAA website compiles the most popular stories and topics that have surfaced in the past year.
“NOAA’s Office of Habitat Conservation continued conserving, protecting and restoring habitat in 2021. We shared almost 80 stories about this work and habitat’s value to fisheries and communities,” the organization wrote on their website.
Of the stories highlighted, some focused on Chesapeake Bay, the largest U.S. estuary and one of the most productive marine sites in the world, while others centered on habitat conservation and restoration.
Among these, the removal of dams and barriers to fish migration and the restoration of oyster reefs made their way to the top of the list.
Other topical stories of the year relate to wetland conservation, engaging saltwater anglers, previous habitat restoration success across the U.S. and deep sea coral discoveries, NOAA wrote.
