DOL grants to provide training, employment services to help veterans 'overcome obstacles'

Funding from the U.S. Department of Labor will help organizations provide training and employment services to veterans at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

The grants, which will be administered by the Veterans’ Employment and Training Service, will provide funding of $500,000 annually, or $1.5 million over three years, for projects across the county, according to a release from the DOL.

“The awards are part of the VETS’ Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program that assists military veterans to overcome obstacles that have led them to homelessness, and to re-enter the workforce as a means of reducing homelessness,” DOL said.

The total estimated funding for the program is $14 million, with an expected number of awards at 28, according to the grant description.

The program will award grants competitively to state and local workforce investment boards, local public agencies and nonprofit organizations, tribal governments and faith-based and community organizations, according to the DOL. The services provided will help veterans experiencing homelessness learn occupational skills, attain apprenticeships or on-job training opportunities, and receive job search and placement assistance.

The final date to apply is Feb. 23.
