EPA proposes update on Superfund site in Williston; new funds to 'jump start the groundwater cleanup'

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is offering an update for its plan to clean up the Commerce Street Plume Superfund site in Williston, VT.

In a news release, the EPA said that the update, known as an “Explanation of Significant Differences,” is being conducted without any fundamental changes in the cleanup plan. According to the EPA, the site, located in an industrial park in Williston, has been targeted for cleanup under a plan established in 2015. The property has been used for manufacturing since 1960.

“The primary source of contamination for the site was an unlined lagoon at the property, which was used to dispose of industrial rinse water and sludge wastes,” the EPA said in the news release.

The EPA said the update will not change the overall terms, scope or cost of its planned cleanup.

According to the news release, the site has been selected to receive funding under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which could provide a boost to the effort to clean up groundwater. "The funding will jump start the groundwater cleanup," on hold since 2018 as it awaited monies, the release said.

Williston is among 49 previously unfunded Superfund sites that are targeted to benefit from a $1 billion investment from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the EPA said.

As part of the update, the EPA said in a separate release that members of the public can comment by email to Luce.Darryl@epa.gov.gov, or by mail to Darryl Luce, U.S. EPA Region 1 Mail Code: 07-1, 5 Post Office Square, Suite 100, Boston, MA 02109-3912. The deadline is midnight Feb. 23.
