Two Austin men sentenced to federal prison after attempted robbery and shooting

Two men have been sentenced to federal prison on Friday following an attempted robbery and shooting of a convenience store employee in Austin.

On Jan. 28, two Austin men received lengthy federal prison sentences after an attempted robbery of a gas station convenience store that ended with the shooting of an employee in October of 2020, according to a news release from the US Attorney's Office in the Western District of Texas.

“These significant sentences reflect our office’s unwavering commitment to address violent crime in our community and protect the public,” said U.S. Attorney Ashley C. Hoff in the news release. “I am grateful for the collective efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Austin Police Department in investigating this case.”

Deon Ross, 37, and Lavante Carter, 19, attempted to rob the gas station in Austin, showing their weapons to two employees. Ross shot one of the employees after both robbers demanded cash. Both men were arrested within a few months after the incident, according to the news release.

“Thanks to the hard work of the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, dangerous offenders are now off the streets,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Combs.

Ross was sentenced to 271 months in federal prison while Carter was sentenced to 135 months in federal prison.
