The United States cattle inventory was down 2% from January 2021, a report released on Jan. 31 said.
The report released by the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Agricultural Statistics Board and the United States Department of Agriculture includes information that all cattle and calves, all cows and heifers that have calved, beef cows and all heifers 500 pounds and over as of Jan. 1, were among cattle that were down 2% from last year.
“There were 91.9 million head of cattle and calves on U.S. farms as of Jan. 1, 2022,” a press release said.
The 91.9 million head was 2 percent below the reported 93.8 million head of all cattle and calves on Jan. 1, 2021, the report said.
“All cows and heifers that have calved, at 39.5 million head, were 2 percent below the 40.3 million head on January 1, 2021. Beef cows, at 30.1 million head, were down 2 percent from a year ago,” the report said. “All heifers 500 pounds and over as of January 1, 2022, totaled 19.8 million head, 2 percent below the 20.2 million head on January 1, 2021.”
Approximately 34,800 operators nationwide were surveyed during the first half of January for the report.
