The U.S. Department of Justice recently announced that a Long Island MS-13 gang leader has been sentenced for his crimes.
According to a press release, Carlos Argueta, a former leader of the MS-13 gang from the clique Freeport Locos Salvatruchas has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for racketeering and firearms charges.
The firearms charges are in connection with his participation in the murder of fellow MS-13 member Jose Pena. According to the press release, Pena was murdered because the gang suspected him of being a homosexual, which was a violation of their rules.
Argueta also participated in the attempted murder of an alleged rival gang member outside Brentwood public library on Jan. 15, 2016.
"Argueta, a violent leader in the MS-13, shot and wounded a so-called 'rival' in broad daylight outside of a public library, and then participated in the pre-planned brutal slashing and stabbing death of one of his alleged MS-13 accomplices in that shooting," Breon Peace, United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York said, according to the press release. "Today’s lengthy sentence ensures that Argueta will no longer inflict senseless violence and bloodshed on our streets."
Argueta pleaded guilty to the charges for the murder of Jose Pena in July 2019.
