Department of Homeland Security issues a National Terrorism Advisory System Bulletin

The Department of Homeland Security has issued a National Terrorism Advisory System Bulletin, replacing the previous bulletin that was set to expire on the eighth.

The bulletin was issued due to the assessment that the nation remains in a heightened threat environment. This is due to various factors, including the turbulent online environment in which foreign and domestic threat actors peddle mis-, dis-, and mal- (MDM) information. These inflammatory forms of information introduce and amplify friction between members of society and sow seeds of discord toward the government. Perhaps the most infamous form of MDM information is the conspiracy theory, which has become more and more popular in recent years. MDM information perpetuates terrorism due to potentially inspiring acts of violence. Acts of targeted violence remain a threat to the nation.

“DHS remains committed to proactively sharing timely information and intelligence about the evolving threat environment with the American public,” said Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. "We also remain committed to working with our partners across every level of government and in the private sector to prevent all forms of terrorism and targeted violence, and to support law enforcement efforts to keep our communities safe."

This is the fifth NTAS bulletin that the DHS has issued since January 2021. The DHS has taken several measures in combating terrorism since that time and has spent $77 million in preventing and preparing for threats.

The newest bulletin is set to expire on June 7.
