Under Secretary Uzra Zeya and acting Assistant Secretary Lisa Peterson traveled to the Global Conference for Media Freedom last week, hosted by Estonia to discuss the protection of freedoms for journalists around the world.
In a Feb. 8 press release, the US Department of State (DOS) announced its part in the Global Conference for Media Freedom, where Secretary Zeya’s reinforced America’s dedication to its international partners by remaining resolute in its position that journalists must be able to work free from threats, harassment, violence, and all forms of intimidation.
"While in Tallinn, Under Secretary Zeya and Acting Assistant Secretary Peterson will engage senior government counterparts and civil society on human rights issues and will emphasize the United States’ firm commitment to press freedom – both online and offline – and advocate for the safety of journalists and media workers worldwide," said the State Department in the press release.
A third of its kind, the Global Conference serves as a multilateral forum where multiple stakeholders share their goals to strengthen global efforts aimed at defending media freedom as well as the safety of journalists around the globe. As part of the event, a pledging session with opening remarks by Peterson was included with the aim of defending media freedom, which was a key theme of President Joe Biden's first-ever Summit for Democracy this year.
"As part of the Year of Action, the U.S. and other governments will turn words into action and discuss progress at the second Summit for Democracy," the DOS said in the release.
