153 STEM scholars slated to work with 'expert mentors' at DOE labs and facilities in spring internships

Over 150 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) scholars will participate in workforce development programs this spring courtesy of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

The federal agency said in a Jan. 10 press release that it will punch the tickets for 153 STEM undergraduate students to work in 17 DOE national laboratories and facilities in the Spring 2022 semester.

“The Department of Energy is fully committed to supporting the development of emerging U.S. science and technology leaders. Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) and Community College Internships (CCI) will provide talented students with opportunities to gain hands-on research experience at our national laboratories alongside expert mentors working with state-of-the-art tools,” Under Secretary for Science and Energy Geraldine Richmond said in the release. “These experiences will help participants explore and launch their own lifelong careers in science, while also contributing to the critical work of the labs.”

The workforce development programs are the DOE's CCI and SULI, where students would work with national engineers and laboratory scientists on various DOE projects.

The programs are both offered to undergraduate students three times a year. A total of 21 interns were accepted into the CCI program and 132 into SULI for this spring.

The students come from academic institutions across the country.
