WASHINGTON, DC - Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, today announced that Tom Hassenboehler will serve as the new Subcommittee on Energy and Power Chief Counsel. Outgoing chief counsel Maryam Brown will serve as policy advisor to House Speaker John Boehner.
Upton praised Brown’s dedicated service to the committee, stating, “Maryam was one of the committee’s first hires when I became chairman two years ago, and she has accomplished a great deal during her tenure as chief counsel advising Energy and Power Subcommittee Chairman Whitfield and our entire team. Although we are sad to lose Maryam in the operations of our committee, her move to the Speaker’s office keeps important institutional and policy expertise here in the House."
Hassenboehler, who received his undergraduate and law degrees from Louisiana State University, first worked for Rep. Billy Tauzin (R-LA) before joining the ranks of the Energy and Commerce Committee staff in 2004. Hassenboehler worked as a counsel for the committee until 2008, handling a wide portfolio of energy issues. Hassenboehler then made the transition to the U.S. Senate where he served three years as counsel for the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, further broadening his energy and environmental policy expertise. Hassenboehler returns to Capitol Hill from America’s Natural Gas Alliance.
