WASHINGTON, DC - The House Energy and Commerce Committee today announced its schedule for the week of May 6, 2013. Beginning on Tuesday, the Subcommittee on Energy and Power will look at the potential effects of U.S. energy exports both here and abroad, and the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade will meet to discuss the benefits tourism brings to the U.S. economy. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Subcommittee on Health will hold a markup to consider legislation that would reauthorize both the Animal Drug User Fee Act (ADUFA) and the Animal Generic Drug User Fee Act (AGDUFA). Additionally, the subcommittee will mark up bipartisan legislation aimed at securing this nation’s pharmaceutical distribution supply chain. Finally, on Thursday, the Subcommittee on Energy and Power will examine grid reliability challenges as America’s energy resource landscape continues to evolve.
On Tuesday, May 7, the Subcommittee on Energy and Power will continue its look at America’s energy renaissance with a hearing on “U.S. Energy Abundance: Exports and the Changing Global Energy Landscape." The subcommittee will examine the impacts that exporting U.S. energy resources, in particular Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), could have both here and abroad. Members will hear testimony regarding geopolitical issues related to LNG exports, the history of trying to control exports and prices, and the potential domestic benefits of exports including job creation and reducing the trade deficit.as they are posted.
Also on Tuesday, the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade will hold a hearing on “Vacation Nation: How Tourism Benefits Our Economy." Tourism in the United States is a multibillion-dollar industry that supports nearly 8 million American jobs. Next Tuesday’s hearing will explore the state of our nation’s tourism industry and opportunities for growth. Members will hear from expert witnesses on tourism’s impact on jobs, the economy, and the value it brings to localities.as they are posted.
On Tuesday, May 7, the Subcommittee on Health will hold opening statements for a markup on legislation reauthorizing both the ADUFA and AGDUFA, which expire at the end of FY2013. Reauthorization of these laws is essential to ensure that the Food and Drug Administration can continue the timely review of new and generic animal drugs. The subcommittee will also mark up bipartisan legislation to secure the pharmaceutical supply chain for America’s patients while preventing duplicative federal and state requirements. Additionally, it would establish a collaborative, transparent process between the FDA and stakeholders in order to better understand how to unit-level traceability. On Thursday, May 9, the Subcommittee on Energy and Power will continue its American Energy Security and Innovation hearing series with a hearing on “Grid Reliability Challenges in a Shifting Energy Resource Landscape." This hearing builds on the subcommittee’s March 5 and March 19 hearings on the role of fuel diversity in the nation’s electricity generation portfolio and gas-electric coordination challenges. With natural gas and renewables playing a greater role in the generation mix, several challenges have been identified as a result of this evolving energy landscape. To explore these issues, members will hear from a variety of stakeholders, including representatives from the natural gas, electricity, and manufacturing sectors.as they are posted.
