WASHINGTON, DC - The House Energy and Commerce Committee today announced its hearing schedule for the week of May 5, 2014. The committee will hold a roundtable discussion on biomedical innovation, review the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s FY 2015 budget, and examine Obamacare enrollment.

On Tuesday, May 6, the Energy and Commerce Committee will host distinguished thought leaders, including officials from NIH and FDA, in the first public discussion regarding the state of biomedical innovation in the United States. The committee is seeking input and soliciting ideas on how Congress can help accelerate the discovery, development, and delivery of promising new treatments for patients. A list of participants can be found here. This new initiative, 21st Century Cures, aims to accelerate the pace of medical breakthroughs in the United States.

On Wednesday, May 7, the Subcommittee on Energy and Power will hold a hearing to examine the NRC’s budget request and the range of issues confronting the agency. All five NRC commissioners will testify. The Majority Memorandum and witness list can be found here. Witness testimony will be available at the same link as it is posted.

Also on Wednesday, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a hearing on “PPACA Enrollment and the Insurance Industry." Data provided to the committee by every insurance provider in the health care law’s Federally Facilitated Marketplace (FFM) shows that, as of April 15, 2014, only 67 percent of individuals and families that had selected a health plan in the federally facilitated marketplace had paid their first month’s premium and therefore completed the enrollment process. The subcommittee has invited representatives of some of the nation’s largest insurance providers and their trade groups to testify on the state of the health care law.
