WASHINGTON, DC - House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) and Health Subcommittee Chairman Joe Pitts (R-PA) applauded today’s Supreme Court decision to defend religious freedom in the case of Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood versus Burwell. In June of 2013, the committee released the report, “The Fight to Preserve Religious Liberty: Obamacare’s Assault on a Founding Touchstone of the United States of America, " which featured the case of Conestoga Wood Specialties and the Hahn family. Conestoga Wood is located in Pitts’ Pennsylvania congressional district.
“Today’s decision is a welcome victory for religious freedom. The president’s health care law is riddled with mandates forcing the American people to comply despite personal misgivings or beliefs. This HHS mandate, in particular, demonstrated an unprecedented infringement that violates the very ideals America was founded on. Our government should not force anyone to make a choice between violating their conscience or paying steep fines and potentially facing bankruptcy. ‘Fines on faith’ are against the American way, and we are pleased today that the Supreme Court has protected this right and also protected the thousands of jobs threatened by the HHS mandate."
