WASHINGTON, DC - The House Energy and Commerce Committee today announced its hearing schedule for the week of July 7, 2014. The committee will hold two hearings to continue its 21st Century Cures initiative. Members will discuss opportunities for modernizing clinical trials and incorporating patient perspectives in the #Path2Cures. The committee will also examine the role of states and the federal government regarding environmental policies and implementation.
On Wednesday, the Health Subcommittee will continue its efforts in the 21st Century Cures initiative with a hearing to discuss, “21st Century Cures: Modernizing Clinical Trials." Subcommittee members will examine opportunities to bring the clinical trial process into the 21st century, in order to accelerate the discovery, development, and delivery cycle of new cures and treatments. The subcommittee recently heard testimony expressing concerns about the costs and regulations surrounding medical device and drug clinical trials, noting, “Clinical trials are the greatest cost driver of biologic and drug development." Subcommittee members will hear from a variety of experts about steps Congress can take to improve this process so that patients have faster access to more effective, innovative, and personalized treatments.
On Friday, the Health Subcommittee will hold a hearing, “21st Century Cures: Incorporating the Patient Perspective." Patient perspective is central to the 21st Century Cures initiative, which is why the subcommittee has placed a special emphasis on gathering patient input as it solicits ideas from interested parties on how to achieve its common goal of accelerating the pace of cures. Subcommittee members will discuss the value of incorporating patient perspective into the benefit-risk framework as it continues exploring ways to ensure a more effective and efficient drug development and review process.
Also on Friday, the Environment and the Economy Subcommittee will hold a hearing on “Constitutional Considerations: States vs. Federal Environmental Policy Implementation." The hearing will examine the interplay between the power of Congress to regulate interstate commerce and the power of the states under the Tenth Amendment. Academic policy experts will provide insight into Constitutional considerations when Congress decides whether states or the federal government should lead implementation of various environmental policies.
