WASHINGTON, DC - The House Energy and Commerce Committee today announced its hearing schedule for the week of September 8, 2014. The committee will advance the #Path2Cures effort with a Health Subcommittee hearing Tuesday and roundtable Wednesday, continue its oversight of the EPA’s Clean Power Plan, and review legislation to improve care for victims of human trafficking.
On Tuesday, September 9, the Subcommittee on Health will hold a hearing to examine the regulation of Lab Developed Tests as a continuation of the committee’s bipartisan 21st Century Cures initiative. Members will hear testimony from various witnesses on recently released guidance from FDA and its impact on innovation and the practice of precision medicine. Witness testimony will be available at the same link as posted.
Also on Tuesday, the Subcommittee on Energy and Power will hear state regulators’ perspective on EPA’s Clean Power Plan. In EPA’s proposal, the agency asserts unprecedented new regulatory authority over how electricity is generated, transmitted, and consumed in states throughout the country. Next week’s hearing will allow state officials to provide their thoughts on the regulations as proposed, including the challenges they face with implementing this plan. Witness testimony will be available at the same link as posted.
On Wednesday, Sept. 10, the Subcommittee on Health will hold a roundtable discussion, marking the next phase of the #Path2Cures initiative. Throughout August several members held roundtable discussions in their districts to generate local perspectives on accelerating the discovery, development, and delivery of new cures and treatments. Members are returning to Washington with important perspectives from their districts and will share them with distinguished thought leaders in the public health sector. Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell, NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins, and FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg are among the blockbuster lineup scheduled to review the feedback the committee has received. The full participant list can be found here.
On Thursday, Sept. 11, the Subcommittee on Health will review legislation authored by Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) designed to improve care for victims of human trafficking, and to improve the training for health providers so they can better identify victims of human trafficking.
