Look Ahead: Committee Announces Hearing Schedule for the Week of September 15

WASHINGTON, DC - The House Energy and Commerce Committee today announced its hearing schedule for the week of Sept. 15, 2014. The committee will review legislation to recruit minorities for energy jobs, oversee FCC budget and management, examine the effects of cross-border data flows, explore effective suicide prevention efforts, and continue the 21st Century Cures initiative with a discussion on the growing threat of antibiotic resistance.

On Wednesday, Sept. 17, the Subcommittee on Energy and Power will examine H.R. 4526, the 21st Century Energy Workforce Development Jobs Initiative Act of 2014, introduced by subcommittee Ranking Member Bobby Rush (D-IL), Chairman Ed Whitfield (R-KY), and Rep. Bill Johnson (R-OH). The legislation will improve education and training for energy jobs and recruit historically underrepresented groups, such as women and minorities, to these jobs. Also on Wednesday, the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology will continue its oversight of the Federal Communications Commission’s management and budget. The hearing follows the committee’s requests for documents regarding the commission’s workload and backlog. FCC Managing Director Jon Wilkins and Inspector General David Hunt will testify.as posted.

Finally on Wednesday, the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade will hear from experts to better understand the effects cross-border data flows have on the U.S. economy and jobs and examine how potential protectionist data policies could impact businesses.as posted.

On Thursday, Sept. 18, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will explore effective suicide prevention options. This hearing is part of the committee’s continued investigation into understanding serious mental illness and the federal programs aimed at addressing SMI.as posted.

On Friday, Sept. 19, the Subcommittee on Health will hold a hearing on 21st Century Cures: Examining Ways to Combat Antibiotic Resistance and Foster New Drug Development. As the 21st Century Cures initiative continues, subcommittee members will review the growing threat of antibiotic resistance and explore efforts to counteract this global health threat.as posted.
