WASHINGTON, DC - The Subcommittee on Environment and the Economy today unanimously approved the bipartisan TSCA Modernization Act by a vote of 21 to 0. The draft now advances to the full committee.
The TSCA Modernization Act is sponsored by Environment and the Economy Subcommittee Chairman John Shimkus (R-IL), Subcommittee Ranking Member Paul Tonko (D-NY), full committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI), and Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ). It is a bipartisan effort to reform the decades-old Toxic Substances Control Act to improve the protection of human health and the environment and to help better facilitate interstate and international commerce. “We have come a long way toward TSCA reform in the past few years. Today marks another step in the process, but we still have a long way to go. That said, I am more encouraged now than ever that we can get this through the finish line with the continued effort of members from both parties and both chambers," said Shimkus.
“The draft we have produced today would strengthen public health and environmental protections, and provide the chemical industry with an efficient, fair program of chemical regulation. I thank Chairman Shimkus, Chairman Upton, and Ranking Member Pallone for the months of hard work they put into this bill. I believe we have crafted a draft here today that has an opportunity to become law. I am optimistic that our continued cooperation will lead to further progress as we move to consideration by the full Committee," said Tonko.

Although this bill will not be the end of our work to address toxic chemicals, it is a strong beginning and will offer significant protections.
