Look Ahead: Committee Announces Hearing Schedule for the Week of June 22

WASHINGTON, DC - The House Energy and Commerce Committee today announced its hearing schedule for the week of June 22.

On Wednesday, the Subcommittee on Health will review the administration’s management of Medicaid dollars. A representative of the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office will testify on its recent report that raises concerns about the lack of transparency, accountability, and consistency in the administration’s management and oversight of spending on Medicaid demonstration programs.as they are posted.

On Thursday, the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade will continue its work to ensure #Safety4Drivers with review of vehicle-to-vehicle communications. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is in the process of a rulemaking that would require vehicle-to-vehicle communications devices in new cars. Members will review the preparations that are being made in both the public and private sector to support the deployment of this technology in consumer vehicles and on the nation’s roadways. This hearing builds on the committee’s work to review the use of spectrum for these communication as well as a look at what NHTSA and manufacturers are doing to protect connected automobiles from cyber threats.as they are posted.

Also on Thursday, the Subcommittee on Health will examine three bipartisan public health bills that aim to improve health care for newborns, infants, and children.as they are posted.

Members will discuss the following bipartisan bills at Thursday’s hearing:

* H.R. 2820, the Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Reauthorization Act, introduced by Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Doris Matsui (D-CA), reauthorizes the Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act of 2005, which provides federal support for cord blood donation and research essential to increasing patient access to transplant.

* H.R. 1462, the Protecting Our Infants Act of 2015, authored by Reps. Katherine Clark (D-MA) and Steve Stivers (R-OH), will combat the rise of prenatal opioid abuse and neonatal abstinence syndrome. In recent years, there has been a steady rise in the number of overdose deaths involving heroin. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the death rate for heroin overdose doubled from 2010 to 2012. This bill will address the growing problem and help protect newborns and infants.

* H.R. 1344, the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Act of 2015, authored by Health Subcommittee Vice Chairman Brett Guthrie (R-KY) and Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA), amends the public health service act to reauthorize a program for early detection, diagnosis and treatment regarding deaf and hard-of-hearing newborns, infants, and young children.
