WASHINGTON, DC - The House Committee on Energy and Commerce today announced its hearing schedule for the week of October 26.

On Tuesday, the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology will review the economic impacts of the FCC’s decision to implement heavy-handed utility-style regulation of the Internet. Members will examine the effect of the commission’s rule on investment and deployment of broadband networks and what that means for American consumers, jobs, and innovation. The Majority Memorandum and witness list can be found online here. Witness testimony will be posted at the same link as it is available.

Also on Tuesday, the Subcommittee on Environment and the Economy will review and examine the implementation of the Hazardous Waste Electronic Manifest Establishment Act, a bill that the Energy and Commerce Committee helped usher into law during the 112th Congress. The law was enacted to modernize the dated paper manifest system, alleviate burdensome costs on waste handlers, states, and private entities, and streamline the hazardous waste shipment process.as they are posted.

On Wednesday, the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology will review proposals to break down barriers to broadband deployment. The proposals would streamline processes for getting access to federal lands and utility poles, require smart, dig-once policies that take advantage of existing roadwork to deploy fiber conduit, and examine the bureaucracy that impedes private sector investment in broadband.as they are posted.

Also on Wednesday, the Subcommittee on Environment and the Economy will examine ongoing issues related to the implementation of the Low Level Radioactive Waste Policy Act, which provided state governments with the responsibility of managing and disposing of LLRW generated within state borders, in an effort to find out what’s working with the law, what’s not, and how low-level waste interstate compacts are functioning. The subcommittee will also examine the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s regulations governing management and disposal of low-level radioactive waste. Members will also hear from the Department of Energy about the federal government’s disposal strategy and receive an update on DOE’s plan to dispose of waste Greater Than Class C - the most hazardous LLRW.as they are posted.

On Thursday, the Subcommittee on Health will hold a hearing on Examining the Regulation of Diagnostic Tests and Laboratory Operations. The hearing seeks to build upon the thoughtful dialogue achieved throughout the 21st Century Cures process, especially the feedback received in response to the committee’s white paper on A Modernized Framework for Innovative Diagnostic Tests. Members will have an opportunity to hear directly from officials at FDA and CMS about each agency’s respective responsibilities and areas of expertise in the regulation of diagnostic tests, as well as what their roles should entail going forward.as they are posted.
