WASHINGTON, DC - House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) and Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade Subcommittee Chairman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX) today commented on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) announcement regarding a breakthrough in automotive safety innovation - autonomous, or self-driving vehicles.
“It is important for NHTSA to remain engaged as new and developing technologies pave the way for the transportation options of the future. America continues to lead the auto world in breakthrough innovations and it is critical we embrace technologies that keep families safe on the road," said Upton and Burgess. “While the concept may still be a bit unbelievable, driverless cars are no longer a fantasy and they’re getting closer to hitting our roads everyday. Our policies need to keep America in the fast lane of innovation and auto safety for years to come. Lives depend on it."
