WASHINGTON, DC - House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) and Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) today welcomed the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) passing seven bipartisan bills as part of its medical innovation package that is similar to the House passed H.R. 6, the 21st Century Cures Act. Momentum continues in the collective effort to deliver #CuresNow.
“The effort to deliver cures now is gaining steam and we must keep that momentum going. We commend the Senate HELP committee for its bipartisan work," said Upton and DeGette. “Today’s votes are an important milestone on the path to cures. This has always been a collective and inclusive undertaking, and we look forward to continued progress in the weeks ahead. For many patients and their families, they can’t wait any longer."
During the markup, Senate HELP Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-TN) noted Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) commitment to bring the Cures companion bill to the Senate floor this year, and credited the House for leading this effort.
“The House has done its work. The president has made his proposals for precision medicine and for a cancer moonshot. We have worked for a year to produce 50 different bipartisan legislative proposals," said Chairman Alexander in his prepared opening statement.
