Look Ahead: Committee Announces Hearing Schedule for the Week of February 29

WASHINGTON, DC - The House Committee on Energy and Commerce today announced its hearing schedule for the week of February 29.

On Tuesday, the Subcommittee on Energy and Power will hold a legislative hearing to examine pipeline safety reauthorization. The Energy and Commerce Committee has been at the forefront of improving pipeline safety. Members will examine a discussion draft of a bill that reauthorizes the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s (PHMSA) pipeline safety program through 2019. The discussion draft contains targeted mandates for PHMSA to increase transparency and accountability, complete overdue regulations, and improve safety. Witness testimony will be posted at the same link as it is available.

Also on Tuesday, the Subcommittee on Health will hold a hearing entitled, “Examining the Financing and Delivery of Long-Term Care in the U.S." The hearing will provide an overview of the current financing and delivery of long-term care in the U.S. In 2014 alone, roughly $340 billion was spent on long-term care, amounting to more than 13 percent of the almost $2.6 trillion spent on personal health expenditures. With 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 every day, the demand for long-term care is expected to increase. Witness testimony will be posted at the same link as it is available.

On Wednesday, the Subcommittee on Energy and Power will hold a hearing entitled, “The Fiscal Year 2017 DOE Budget." Energy Secretary Ernest J. Moniz will provide testimony on the proposed budget.as they are posted.

Also on Wednesday, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a hearing entitled, “Examining the U.S. Public Health Response to the Zika Virus." Expected to testify are Dr. Thomas Frieden, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Dr. Nicole Lurie, Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) at the Department of Health and Human Services, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In preparation for the hearing, Chairman Murphy and Ranking Member Diana DeGette (D-CO) sent letters last week to Dr. Frieden, Dr. Lurie, and Dr. Fauci, outlining specific questions the government officials should be prepared to answer either in written or oral testimony for the hearing.as they are posted.

Lastly on Wednesday, the Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives will hold its first hearing on the issue of Bioethics and Fetal Tissue. At its first hearing, members of the Select Panel will hear from professors, medical practitioners, individuals doing biomedical research, and those within America’s faith traditions, to learn about the ethical implications and issues that transpire for all parties involved in the process when a pregnancy is terminated.as they are posted.

On Thursday, the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade will hold its next installment of its Disrupter Series, with a review of wearable technologies and their impact on our 21st century economy. Additionally, members will discuss the many ways these technologies are changing how consumers engage in everyday commerce and access critical health information.as they are posted.
