The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on March 3, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - In recognition of Rare Disease Week on Capitol Hill, Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) had a full schedule Wednesday morning talking 21st Century Cures. Upton first addressed approximately 150 advocates as part of Rare Disease Legislative Advocates’ Lobby Day Breakfast. Upton later made the case for 21st Century Cures while participating in a panel discussion hosted by the Milken Institute.

With patient advocates storming Capitol Hill from all across the country, the calls for #CuresNow are growing louder. Chairman Upton provided an update on where the bill stands in the U.S. Senate, and shared his optimism that the bill will become law in the coming months. He also gave the advocates a pep talk before their critical legislative meetings. Upton urged the advocates to continue sharing their personal stories and remain active on digital media.

Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) also spoke at the event, touching on the importance of the OPEN Act, a critical piece of 21st Century Cures. Bilirakis also thanked the advocates for their willingness to share their stories and make the trip to Washington, D.C.

After the breakfast, Chairman Upton also participated in a panel discussion hosted by the Milken Institute on “The Promise of Public Health." Speaking about 21st Century Cures, Upton reinforced that patients can’t wait any longer - they need #CuresNow.
