WASHINGTON, DC - The Subcommittee on Energy and Power, chaired by Rep. Ed Whitfield (R-KY), and the Subcommittee on Environment and the Economy, chaired by Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL), have scheduled a hearing for Wednesday, April 20, at 10 a.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “Fiscal Year 2017 Nuclear Regulatory Commission Budget."

The hearing will continue the committee’s oversight of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the independent agency responsible for overseeing the safe use of radioactive materials, including our fleet of commercial nuclear power plants. Members will discuss the NRC’s 2017 budget proposal with the NRC commissioners to ensure that it reflects the agency’s best efforts to fulfill its obligations. The subcommittees will also examine the commission’s long-term staffing and budgetary needs through the commission’s effort to implement cost-saving measures, known as “Project Aim 2020," and related NRC initiatives and regulatory activities.

“The mission of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission remains vital to the stability of the entire energy sector and the safety and security of millions of people who depend on its consistent and reliable actions," said Chairmen Whitfield and Shimkus. “The subcommittees are committed to ensuring that the commission lives up to its reputation as an independent, credible safety regulator. We look forward to a productive dialogue on the commission’s ongoing efforts to right-size the agency and become more efficient. An NRC best prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century is critical to fulfilling our nuclear future."
