MARKUP: #SubEnergyPower to Vote on Bipartisan Bills to Address Ozone and Spur Advanced Nuclear Technology

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on May 9, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - The Subcommittee on Energy and Power, chaired by Rep. Ed Whitfield (R-KY), has scheduled a markup for Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at 5 p.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building to consider two bills. H.R. 4775 would facilitate implementation of ozone and other national air quality standards, while H.R. 4979 would promote advances in nuclear reactor technology. The subcommittee will convene for opening statements only on Wednesday, and reconvene on Thursday, May 12, 2016, at 10 a.m. in 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

Members will consider the following bills:

H.R. 4775, the Ozone Standards Implementation Act of 2016, authored by Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX), would give states additional time and flexibility to deploy their limited resources when implementing new ozone and other National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), and will address other NAAQS implementation challenges. (A fact sheet can be found here.)

H.R. 4979, the Advanced Nuclear Technology Development Act of 2016, authored by Rep. Bob Latta (R-OH), would ensure that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is prepared to license innovative advanced nuclear technologies.

“We’ve got two thoughtful bipartisan solutions that we’ll vote on this week," said Chairman Whitfield. “Giving states the time and tools they need to comply with ozone standards is good for jobs, the economy, and public health. And paving the way for more rapid development of advanced nuclear technologies with an eye toward the future will help provide the certainty needed for continued innovation."

Electronic copies of the bills can be found on the Energy and Commerce Committee’s website here. A background memorandum, amendments, and votes will be available at the same link as they are posted. Energy & Commerce Online
