The Energy and Commerce Committee has scheduled a full committee markup on Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at 5 p.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building to consider two bipartisan energy bills to protect jobs, the economy, and public health. Members will convene for opening statements only on Tuesday and reconvene Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at 10 a.m.
Members will consider the following bills which were advanced by the Energy and Power Subcommittee this week:
H.R. 4775, the Ozone Standards Implementation Act of 2016, authored by Energy and Power Subcommittee Vice Chairman Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX), would;
* Provide states the flexibility and time needed to implement new ozone standards and address other practical implementation challenges under the National Ambient Air Quality Standards program. (A fact sheet can be found online, here.)
H.R. 4979, the Advanced Nuclear Technology Development Act of 2016, authored by committee member Rep. Bob Latta (R-OH), would;
* Require the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to develop the regulatory framework for safe, advanced nuclear energy technologies. H.R. 4979 would also direct the Department of Energy and NRC to collaborate where appropriate to provide certainty for the development of advanced nuclear technology.
“With these two bipartisan bills next week, we will continue our efforts to protect jobs, the economy, and public health and build upon our bipartisan record of success. Safe, clean nuclear energy not only powers homes in Michigan and across the country, it also helps power local economies. It’s important for innovators to be able to develop new technologies for nuclear energy to solidify its place in our energy portfolio for future generations," said Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI). “The Ozone Standards Implementation Act provides a dose of commonsense by giving states the flexibility they need to implement overlapping ozone rules that threaten jobs and economic growth. Ozone levels are down one-third since 1980 and will continue to trend downward with this thoughtful solution."
