WASHINGTON, DC - Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) today issued the following statement regarding the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s revelation that 300,000 Honda and Acura airbags have a higher risk of exploding.
“Good grief, as we head into the busiest driving weekend of the year with July 4th, folks are still on the road with ticking time bombs in their dashboards. NHTSA’s announcement is further proof that more needs to be done to get these vehicles off the road and up to par. We will keep calling on all parties to do everything they can to make these cars safe, once and for all," said Upton. “Folks back in Michigan and across the country, everyone, should have the peace of mind that when they are behind the wheel, the airbag is there to protect, not cause harm."
According to NHTSA, the higher-risk inflators are in certain 2001-2003 Honda and Acura vehicles:
* 2001-2002 Honda Civic
* 2001-2002 Honda Accord
* 2002-2003 Acura TL
* 2002 Honda CR-V
* 2002 Honda Odyssey
* 2003 Acura CL
* 2003 Honda Pilot
Drivers should immediately visit SaferCar.gov or contact their local dealer to find out if their vehicle is affected.
