COMBATING OPIOIDS: House Overwhelmingly Approves House-Senate Conference Report

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on July 8, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - The House of Representatives today passed the conference report to S. 524, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act by a vote of 407-5. House and Senate opioid conferees met on Wednesday of this week to finalize legislative text and vote on amendments. With the support of well over 200 leading advocacy groups, the report was filed Wednesday evening. Today, the House followed suit advancing the conference report to the Senate for final consideration before heading to the president’s desk.

“We’re in the midst of an opioid crisis that has no boundaries and does not discriminate. In Michigan, we are enduring 10 times as many deaths today as there were 15 years ago. And sadly, the numbers continue to surge," stated Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI), who also chaired the conference. “We owe this effort to the past, present, and sadly, future victims of the opioid epidemic - our neighbors, friends, and family, across every part of the country and every demographic group. Today’s overwhelming bipartisan vote of 407-5 underscores the urgency, and I hope the Senate will swiftly follow suit. We must all come together, and get the job done. What we are doing will help save lives."
