HEARING: #SubCommTech to Examine Rural Call Completion NEXT WEEK

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Sept. 1, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - The Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, chaired by Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR), has scheduled a hearing for Thursday, September 8, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “Improving Rural Call Quality and Reliability."

Members will examine ongoing issues associated with rural call completion. Despite technological advancements in the 21st century, many Americans living in rural areas experience significant problems receiving long distance or wireless calls on their landline telephones. The FCC has made some attempts in addressing the problem but lingering issues persist. The subcommittee will examine H.R. 2566, Improving Rural Call Quality and Reliability Act of 2015, introduced by Rep. David Young (R-IA), which would require intermediate providers to register with the FCC and comply with the service quality standards set by the agency.

“Every single American, regardless of where they live, should have the peace of mind that their calls will get through," said Chairman Walden. “This subcommittee will continue to work on behalf of consumers to solve this very real problem many rural Americans are facing."

The Majority Memorandum, a witness list, and witness testimony will be available here as they are posted.
