HEARING: #SubEnergyPower to Examine the Foundations of the Federal Power Act NEXT WEEK

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Sept. 1, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - The Subcommittee on Energy and Power has scheduled a hearing for Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at 10 a.m. in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “Federal Power Act: Historical Perspectives." Subcommittee Vice Chairman Pete Olson (R-TX) will preside over the hearing.

On June 10, 2016, the committee kicked off its long-term review of the Federal Power Act to ensure the nation’s grid is equipped for the challenges of the 21st century. Committee leaders sent a letter to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Chairman Norman Bay requesting information on the current and future state of electricity markets. The subcommittee will seek to build upon the letter by examining the foundations of existing electricity markets. Specifically, members will explore FERC’s deregulation of electricity in the 1980s and 1990s and how those changes have shaped the wholesale electricity markets today.

“As we continue our examination for the Federal Power Act, next week’s hearing will provide an important opportunity to review and better understand the electricity sector," said full committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI). “Electricity plays such a critical role in all our lives - one that is often taken for granted until the power goes out. It has national security implications, economic implications, and provides for our basic health and welfare. The Federal Power Act and the electricity sector will remain part of the committee’s long-term agenda to ensure consumers across the country continue to receive reliable and affordable electricity."

The Majority Memorandum, a witness list, and witness testimony will be available here as they are posted.
