WASHINGTON, DC - Environment Subcommittee Chairman John Shimkus (R-IL) and Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection Subcommittee Chairman Bob Latta (R-OH) today issued the following statement after President Trump announced that the administration will be reviewing the fuel economy standards under the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Program and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Standards for motor vehicles. These rules were previously put forth by the Obama administration.
“We applaud President Trump on his decision to resume a collaborative examination of the stringent fuel economy standards rather than the midnight political decision of the previous administration," said Shimkus and Latta. “Our nation’s motor vehicles are getting more efficient and will continue to do so, but we must ensure that the standards set are not rigid and that they do not raise sticker prices or threaten the auto industry. We’re looking forward to NHTSA and EPA’s review and remain hopeful they can propose standards that strike the right balance between efficiency and sound economic policy."
