WASHINGTON, DC - The House of Representatives today unanimously passed S. 652, the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Act of 2017, by voice vote. Health Subcommittee Vice Chairman Brett Guthrie (R-KY) authored the House companion bill (H.R. 1539) earlier this year.
S. 652 will revise the Public Health Service Act by expanding access to critical resources for deaf and hard-of-hearing newborns and young children. It will also boost training of health care professionals in helping these young patients, and ensure they in turn can help educate the patient’s family members.
“This is a commonsense bill that will have a beneficial impact on newborns, infants, and young children," said #SubHealth Chairman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX). “Our work today clears the way for the president to sign this important bill into law, providing much needed relief and resources to families caring for children with hearing loss."
