WASHINGTON, DC - The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, chaired by Rep. Gregg Harper (R-MS), announced a hearing for Tuesday, July 17, at 10:15 a.m. in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “Examining State Efforts to Improve Transparency of Health Care Costs for Consumers."
#SubOversight will examine recently adopted state laws and policies that improve transparency of health care costs for consumers, making information more readily available. To date, several states have created consumer websites to facilitate price shopping for health care services, and a recent report from the National Conference of State Legislatures details the growing list of states that have enacted laws prohibiting “gag clauses" in contracts that restrict pharmacists from disclosing price options.
“I regularly hear about patients as consumers not knowing how much their medical care will cost, or having difficulty learning what steps they must take to get that information," said #SubOversight Chairman Harper. “Next week, we plan to explore the different approaches that states have taken recently to improve transparency for patients and the impact that these tools have had on their care and their wallets."
