Walden and Burgess on Release of SAMHSA Grants to Help Combat the Opioid Crisis

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Sept. 5, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) and Health Subcommittee Chairman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX) issued the following statement after the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced the release of grants to help individuals battling substance use and mental health disorders who have also been in the criminal justice system.

“Expanding access to treatment and establishing critical health care partnerships can make a big difference in the lives of those battling addiction. These grants are an important tool for our communities, and individuals desperately looking for another chance. In June, the House sent a comprehensive, bipartisan bill to the Senate that will advance treatment and recovery initiatives, improve prevention, protect our communities, and bolster our efforts to fight fentanyl. We’re working with the Senate to pass H.R. 6, so we can continue to add to the toolbox our communities are relying on to combat the opioid crisis."

Background:

H.R. 6, the Substance Use-Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment (SUPPORT) for Patients and Communities Act, builds upon the policies in the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA), which was signed into law in July 2016, to help combat the opioid crisis.
