Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee to Hold Hearing on EPA’s Proposal to Undermine Mercury Protections

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on May 14, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee Chair Diana DeGette (D-CO) announced today that the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee will hold a hearing on Tuesday, May 21, at 10 am in 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing will examine the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) recent proposal that says limiting mercury and other air toxics from coal and oil-fired power plants is not “appropriate and necessary" under the Clean Air Act. The hearing is entitled, “Undermining Mercury Protections: EPA Endangers Human Health and the Environment."

“The EPA’s Mercury and Air Toxics Standards has been wildly successful in removing dangerous pollutants from our air. Now the Trump EPA is endangering this progress with a proposal that would undermine these critically important public health and environmental safeguards," Pallone and DeGette said. “This is yet another troubling indication of this Administration’s blatant disregard for the Agency’s mission. Our hearing next week will continue the Committee’s efforts to ensure EPA is doing its job to fully and effectively protect human health and the environment."

Information for this hearing, including the Committee Memorandum, witness list, testimony and a live webcast will be posted HERE as they become available.
