Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Announces Hearing on Car Safety Technology & Summer Driving Dangers

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on May 16, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. - Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Chair Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) announced today that the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee will hold a hearing on technology to make cars safer on Thursday, May 23, at 10 am in the John D. Dingell Room, 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing will be entitled, “Summer Driving Dangers: Exploring Ways to Protect Drivers and Their Families."

“As summer approaches, we’re reminded that road trips and rising temperatures too often lead to more crashes, injuries and deaths, including deaths of children unintentionally left in hot cars. However, technologies are available right now that can dramatically decrease the number of vehicle-related deaths and injuries," Pallone and Schakowsky said. “While we look toward a future of self-driving cars, we should not forget about the lifesaving technology available right now. We look forward to discussing how to expand the availability and deployment of those technologies next week."

Information for this hearing, including the Committee Memorandum, witness list and testimony, and a live webcast, will be posted HERE as they become available.
