Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Environment and Climate Change Chairman Paul Tonko (D-NY) announced today that the Environment and Climate Change Subcommittee will hold a legislative hearing on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 10 am in the John D. Dingell Room, 2123 Rayburn House Office Building on H.R. 3256, legislation that would extend the authorization for the Chemical Facility Antiterrorism Standards (CFATS) Program through 2025. The hearing is entitled, “Protecting and Securing Chemical Facilities from Terrorist Attacks."
“More than 134 million Americans live in vulnerability zones around our nation’s chemical facilities, putting them at risk from terrorism, intentional acts and extreme weather impacts. Many of these communities already bear an undue burden of environmental risk," said Pallone and Tonko. “We must improve the security and resiliency of chemical plants and ensure the safety of our plant workers, first responders and the surrounding communities. We look forward to hearing from expert witnesses next week on the anniversary of 9/11 as we work to move this important piece of legislation forward."
