E&C Health Subcommittee to Hold Legislative Hearing to Address National Youth Tobacco Epidemic

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Sept. 30, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Health Subcommittee Chairwoman Anna G. Eshoo (D-CA) announced today that the Health Subcommittee will hold a legislative hearing on Wednesday, Oct. 16, to consider Pallone’s legislation to respond to the national youth tobacco epidemic.

“Youth e-cigarette usage continues to increase at disturbing rates and the troubling reports of vaping-related illnesses and the many tragic losses of life make clear that Congress must pass comprehensive legislation to address this epidemic," Pallone and Eshoo said. “This is a national public health crisis, and it’s why we’re taking up comprehensive legislation to address the proliferation of e-cigarettes and other tobacco products among kids. Our country is on the cusp of losing a new generation to a lifetime of tobacco and nicotine addiction and we cannot allow this to happen."

Earlier this year, Pallone and Rep. Donna Shalala (D-FL) introduced The Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act, which includes a ban on all characterizing flavors of tobacco products, including menthol.

Additional details will be announced the week prior to the hearing.
