Pallone & Schakowsky: Cruise Industry Should Fully Refund Passengers Who Cancel Trips Due to Coronavirus

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on March 10, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. - Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Chair Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) issued the following statement today after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended that all travelers should avoid cruises:

“Following the CDC recommendation that all Americans avoid taking cruises as long as the coronavirus continues to spread, we’re calling on the cruise industry to fully refund passengers who cancel their trips. No one should have to choose between their health and safety and losing their hard-earned money on a trip they shouldn’t take due to circumstances far outside their control.

“This growing crisis will be hard on everyone - consumers, businesses and government. It is imperative that we all work together to ensure Americans remain healthy and that consumers, as well as businesses, are protected as the disruptions to our everyday lives increase."
