Walden, Rodgers Statement on House Passage of Consumer Protection & Commerce Bills

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Nov. 17, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, DC - Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader Greg Walden (R-OR) and Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) released a statement after the House of Representatives passed three consumer protection and commerce bills from the Energy and Commerce Committee.

“As our nation continues to fight COVID-19, bad actors have sought to take advantage of the pandemic to scam American consumers with false promises of cures, tests, stimulus checks, and more. This not only hurts innocent Americans during an incredibly difficult time; it also undermines the work of public health officials to create a vaccine and protect the health and safety of our communities," said Walden and Rodgers. “We are proud these bills take important steps to keep consumers safe and prioritize our most vulnerable during COVID-19 and beyond, and we encourage the Senate to take up these critical bills soon."

Today, the House passed the following bills:

* The Combating Pandemic Scams Act of 2020 (R. 6435 ), by Reps. Buddy Carter (R-GA), Richard Hudson (R-NC), Ann Kuster (D-NH), and Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), which would ensure the Federal Trade Commission prioritizes informing our most vulnerable Americans on COVID-19 related scams;

* The Fraud and Scam Reduction Act (R. 2610 ), by Reps. Tim Walberg (R-MI) and Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), which would create a Senior Scams Prevention Advisory Council to help stop scams targeting seniors; and,

* The Pandemic Effects on Home Safety and Tourism Act (R. 8121 ), by Reps. Rodney Davis (R-IL) and Tony Cardenas (D-CA), which would require the Consumer Product Safety Commission to publish information on injuries and deaths caused by consumer products during COVID-19.
