Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Chair Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) announced today that the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee will hold a fully remote hearing on Thursday, March 11, at 10:30 a.m. (EST) on the risks increased time online during the COVID-19 pandemic is having on children, from unique vulnerabilities to the potentially detrimental effects of the internet and digital device use. The hearing is entitled, “Kids Online During COVID: Child Safety in an Increasingly Digital Age."
“The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed our nation’s children further into online spaces like never before," Pallone and Schakowsky said. “This nationwide increase in screen time raises important safety concerns for kids and teens who are uniquely impressionable and vulnerable to the malicious aspects of the internet including privacy violations, manipulative marketing, and harmful or disturbing content. Next week, we will hear from experts in technology and pediatric health on how we can better protect our children in an increasingly online world."
This hearing will be conducted remotely via Cisco Webex video conferencing. Members of the public may view the hearing via live webcast accessible on the Energy and Commerce Committee’s website. Please note the webcast will not be available until the hearing begins.
