Rodgers and Bilirakis Statement on EU-U.S. Privacy Shield

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on July 16, 2021. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. - House Energy and Commerce Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Republican Leader for the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) released the following statement today on the one-year anniversary of the European Court of Justice ruling to invalidate the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield.

“The decision to invalidate the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield Framework was a major setback for the privacy protections of Europeans and Americans and a significant disruption to cross-border data flow that so many charities, NGOs, and small businesses rely on. This anniversary is a sharp reminder of the need for Congress to step up and do its job. It is critical for Energy and Commerce to show leadership in protecting Americans’ data and finally enact a national privacy standard in the U.S. We urge our Democratic colleagues to take concrete steps-including holding hearings and markups-towards developing a strong federal privacy framework. We also encourage the Biden administration to work with Congress in a bipartisan way on this issue. The time for a real commitment to privacy is now. Congress must lead the way in showing Americans and the world we are serious about protecting consumer information, while preserving the ingenuity and innovation that is uniquely American."
