Leader Rodgers Statement on Lowering the Cost of Prescription Drugs

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Aug. 12, 2021. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C.-Energy and Commerce Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) released the following statement about President Joe Biden’s expected remarks about government price controls and the cost of prescription drugs.

“House Republicans are leading on a bipartisan plan to lower the costs of prescription drugs and protect American innovation for lifesaving cures and treatments. H.R. 19, the Lower Costs, More Cures Act, will help bring more generic drugs to market faster, make insulin more affordable for our loved ones, lower out-of-pocket spending for seniors, boost access to new medicines, and bring much-needed transparency to drug pricing. These solutions have bipartisan support, including provisions that President Biden has already signed into law this Congress and another that just passed the Senate this week.

“We should be building on this work-not lurching toward socialist government price controls. According to the Congressional Budget Office, experts, and even Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s own colleagues - price controls would result in dozens of fewer cures and treatments. What could one of these be a cure or treatment for? We don’t know. If the Pelosi-Biden drug price control scheme passes, patients would also be forced to beg government bureaucrats for access to any lifesaving discoveries-if these discoveries are even made at all. This is not the American way.

“America has led the world in breakthrough medical discoveries. It’s here hope becomes a reality. I urge the President to abandon any plan that adopts price controls, which have turned other countries into innovation deserts and allowed them to discriminate against people with disabilities and pre-existing conditions. Advocates like Khrystal Davis, patients with rare disease like SMA and ALS, and the millions of other people who deserve a fighting chance in life, need hope in the real promise of American innovation."

Khrystal is a fierce and strong advocate for her son Hunter and other children in the rare disease community. They have HOPE in American innovation for lifesaving cures and treatments.
