Rodgers Statement on Supreme Court Blocking President Biden’s Unlawful Eviction Moratorium

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Aug. 27, 2021. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C - Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) released the following statement after the Supreme Court reversed President Joe Biden’s unlawful eviction moratorium:

“This was entirely avoidable, especially if the Administration properly managed and ensured the rental assistance Congress had already passed was sent to people who needed it. President Biden said himself extending the unlawful eviction moratorium was ‘not likely to pass constitutional muster.’ Now, as predicted we have more uncertainty and confusion. It’s because of the administration’s mismanagement and disregard for the rule of law.

“Financial Services Committee Republican Leader Patrick McHenry and I continue to urge Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats to work with us on H.R. 3913, the Renter Protection Act to ensure help gets into the hands of the renters who are most in need. We sent a letter with our committee colleagues to Speaker Pelosi weeks ago urging her to take action in a bipartisan way to help both renters and property owners across the country who face eviction and the loss of their livelihoods. No one wants to see people lose their homes and the lives they’ve built, and another unconstitutional moratorium is clearly not the answer."

Note: On August 6, 2021, Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and Financial Services Committee, led by Republican Leaders Cathy McMorris-Rodgers (WA-05) and Patrick McHenry (NC-10), sent a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA-12). The letter criticizes President Biden’s extension of the unconstitutional eviction moratorium and condemns House Democrats’ inability to find a permanent solution for American renters.

The Republican Members also demand Speaker Pelosi bring the House back to work to permanently address this avoidable eviction crisis by passing Republicans’ H.R. 3913, the Renter Protection Act. H.R. 3913 will fix the Biden Administration’s mismanagement of the Emergency Rental Assistance programs and get those funds to struggling renters and landlords to pay off back-owed rents, keeping families in their homes.
