Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, and Rep. James Comer, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, sent a letter to Rahul Gupta, Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), requesting a briefing regarding ONDCP’s progress in preparing the 2022 National Drug Control Strategy and ONDCP’s ongoing efforts to mitigate America’s substance use disorder crisis.
According to the most recent provisional data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 100,000 people experienced fatal drug overdoses between June 2020 and June 2021.
“Given the urgent need to address America’s overdose crisis, we request a briefing regarding ONDCP’s progress in preparing the 2022 National Drug Control Strategy and your office’s ongoing efforts to mitigate this crisis—including the efforts described in the Administration’s 2021 Statement of Drug Policy Priorities—by March 4, 2022” the Members wrote.
ONDCP is statutorily required to issue the National Drug Control Strategy, which outlines the federal government’s efforts to address substance use disorder in the United States and ameliorate its harmful effects. On January 28, 2022, Director Gupta informed Congress that ONDCP intends to deliver its 2022 National Drug Control Strategy by June 30, 2022.
