The U.S. Department of Transportation is reportedly allocating $450 million to improve the nation's ports and supply chain, a Feb. 23 news release said.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration announced the funding will be allocated toward port-related projects which would be distributed by the Port Infrastructure Development Program to help expand capacity and improve the movement of goods through supply chains.

“We’re proud to announce this funding to help ports improve their infrastructure — to get goods moving more efficiently and help keep costs under control for American families,” Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. “President Biden is leading the largest ever federal investment in modernizing our country’s ports, which will improve our supply chains and the lives of Americans who depend on them.”

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will allocate roughly $17 billion to port and waterway related projects in total, the news release said. This funding comes as a way to ensure ports and waterways are supported and modernized in order to keep the supply chain from breaking down.

Grants from the Port Infrastructure Development Program are given out through competitive applications which demonstrate how a project will improve the transportation of goods through waterways.

Deadlines to apply for grants in the Portt Infrastructure Development Program is May 16. For more information, go to maritime.dot.gov/PIDPgrants or email PIDPgrants@dot.gov.
