On Thursday, April 7 at 10:00 a.m., the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce, chaired by Rep. John Kline (R-MN), will hold a hearing entitled, “Education Reforms: Promoting Flexibility and Innovation." The hearing will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
Since 1965, the federal government has become increasingly involved in regulating education in the nation. Today, the government administers 90 education programs, each with a different application processes, separate and duplicative reporting requirements, and varying eligibility criteria. This complex web of mandates and regulations redirects resources from students and reduces local education leaders’ abilities to enact targeted reforms that improve student achievement.
Thursday’s hearing will provide members the opportunity to hear testimony from education officials who advocate for increased flexibility at the state and local level. The hearing will be the first in a series of hearings focused on specific education reform proposals.
