Chairman Steil widens inquiry into noncitizen voter registration across ten states

Committee on House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil has expanded an investigation into the registration of noncitizens to vote. On January 22, 2026, Steil sent letters to ten Secretaries of State, asking about each state's procedures for maintaining voter lists and verifying citizenship status.

This action follows a previous letter from Steil and Elections Subcommittee Chair Laurel Lee to the Maryland State Board of Elections. That letter was prompted by media reports that an undocumented immigrant had been registered to vote in Maryland for more than ten years.

“When illegal aliens are found on state voter rolls, it significantly undermines Americans’ confidence in our elections,” said Chairman Steil. “I will continue to seek answers on how frequently this happens and what states are doing to address the issue. American elections are for American citizens only.”

The states receiving the new letters include California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Tennessee.

Fox News Digital first reported on the expanded investigation (https://www.foxnews.com/politics/house-gop-expands-probe-noncitizen-voter-registration-10-states).

The Committee on House Administration is responsible for overseeing federal elections.
