On Wednesday, May 4 at 10:00 a.m., the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections, chaired by Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI), will hold a hearing entitled, “Modernizing Mine Safety." The hearing will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
Federal law governing mine safety is enforced by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Over the last year, MSHA has implemented a number of enforcement changes intended to enhance mine safety, including changes to regulations governing pattern of violations, respirable coal dust, safety and health plans, pre-shift inspections, and rock dusting standards.
As the committee seeks to improve the safety of miners, Wednesday’s hearing will provide an opportunity to examine MSHA’s recent efforts, evaluate efficacy, and consider other changes that may enhance mine safety.
